Meet Audrey Frischman

March 15, 2018

Audrey Frischman is the director of The End of the World Bar and Bathtub, a producer of SMALL PLAYS FOR GIANTS, and one fourth of the artistic leadership behind WalkUpArts. We asked her a couple questions to learn some more about her!

What's your favorite part of working on a new show?

My favorite part is not the beginning. I get very overwhelmed when starting the process of creating a new piece. The blank canvas is way too much for me. I like the part when we have muddled through the beginning and carved out a structure where we can continue our exploration with a few rules in place. And then we can break the rules. But I like to know them first. I think I finally know how I want to direct Bar and Bathtub now that we are about to open.

When has art helped you overcome something in your life?

I often think that my life isn’t very artistic. But then I look around and realize that everything I do all the time has to do with art. Whether it’s literally making my own work or supporting many amazing artists, from the moment I wake up until the moment I am sleeping, I am working on art. It feels like an accident but I think it was on purpose.

What are some what-ifs you're following or hope to follow soon?

I hope to write a children’s book by the end of the year. Keep ya posted.

What other artists inspire you?

Taylor Mac, Daniel Alexander Jones, Bridget Everett, 600 Highwaymen, Amy Herzog, Toshi Reagon, Royal Osiris Karaoke Ensemble, Cole Escola, Martha Graham Cracker, and so many more. Basically people who are wonderfully kind and disgusting and glamorous.

What projects do you have coming up next?

I’m working on all of the SMALL PLAYS FOR GIANTS through July. In April, I’m working on two new plays with two of my favorite playwrights, Max Mondi and Santino DeAngelo. I’m also producing the 27th Puppet Playlist with Sinking Ship Productions and The Tank. After July, I might take a break from theater but I always says that and I never do it so I think it’s my life.
