Returning from a victorious battle, Don Pedro and his forces visit the estate of Leonato, where romance quickly blossoms between a well-respected young nobleman and solider, Claudio, and Leonato's daughter and heir, Hero. Don Pedro eagerly agrees to facilitate the marriage and decides to undertake the considerably more difficult task of matching the witty Benedick and Beatrice, Hero's cousin, both of whom have sworn off love and its vices. Don John, Pedro's defeated and bitter brother, has plans of his own however, and soon the entire household is tangled in a web of devotion and deception.
